For many dogs in the UAE, summer means shorter walks and more time indoors. When the weather cools, the temptation is to make up for lost time at once. A gradual restart is kinder to your dog's muscles and joints, and it makes the good weather count.
Why a slow restart matters
After several low-activity months, a dog's muscles and joints are less conditioned than they were last winter, and many dogs have also gained a little weight. A sudden jump to long beach runs or hours at the park is a common way to end up with a sore, limping dog by the next morning.
We looked at how summer reduces movement in how UAE heat affects your dog's joints, weight and walks. This is the other half of the story: how to rebuild.
A simple way to ramp up
- Start where you are. Use your dog's current routine as the baseline, not last winter's.
- Add a little at a time. Lengthen walks by a few minutes every few days instead of doubling distance in one weekend.
- Warm up and cool down. Begin with a calm, steady walk before any running or play, and finish gently.
- Mix the surfaces. Soft sand and uneven ground work the muscles harder than pavement. Keep beach sessions shorter at first.
- Keep water with you. Cooler air does not mean your dog needs less water.
- Watch the rest of the day. How your dog moves the next morning tells you more than how they looked during the walk.
Signs to take seriously
Contact your vet if you notice:
- stiffness after resting, or slowness to get up
- limping that lasts more than a day or comes back
- reluctance to climb stairs or jump into the car
- licking or favouring one leg
- any sudden change in how your dog moves
Dogs with known joint problems, older dogs and large breeds should have their routine checked with a vet before any big change.
Check the weight too
Extra kilograms put extra load on every joint with each step. If your dog gained weight over the summer, winter is a good time to adjust portions and treats while you build activity back up.
Joint support as part of the routine
Regular, moderate movement is the foundation of joint health. Nutrition can support it alongside the exercise. Our Joints – Dog formula combines Norwegian salmon oil with green-lipped mussel, Harpagophytum and Boswellia extracts, and we explain the science behind each in joint health and mobility in dogs and cats.
A supplement does not replace a vet visit or a gradual exercise plan. It is one part of looking after the joints you will be asking more of this season.
Wherever you are in the Emirates, from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, the cooler months are the best chance to rebuild your dog's fitness. A few weeks of steady, sensible increases are better than one big weekend.
Quick answers
When is the best time to walk dogs in the UAE winter? Mornings and evenings are the most comfortable, and midday is often fine in the coolest months. Check the pavement and your dog's panting as the season changes.
How much exercise does my dog need? It depends on breed, age and health, so ask your vet. Build up gradually either way.
Do cats need a winter restart too? Indoor cats benefit from play and movement, but they set their own pace. Joint stiffness in cats is easy to miss, so mention any change in jumping to your vet.
